Online casino Norway: what English speakers need to know
New to Norway, or just more at home in English? How online casinos work here, the Norwegian words you will meet on every cashier and bonus page, and how we test with our own kroner.

Short answer: Playing at an online casino from Norway works much like anywhere else: you open an account, deposit in kroner, play and ask for a withdrawal. Three things are different here. The law gives Norsk Tipping the exclusive right to offer casino games, payment methods at other casinos change often because banks stop many gambling payments, and big winnings can be taxable. This guide explains each of them in plain English.
- Age limit
- 18 for all gambling in Norway (pengespilloven § 7)
- Exclusive rights
- Norsk Tipping, plus Norsk Rikstoto for horse betting (§ 10 and § 14)
- Tax
- Single wins over NOK 10,000 from taxable gambling must be reported (Skatteetaten)
- Free help
- Hjelpelinjen 800 800 40, weekdays 09–18
Our tested list is being built: a casino only appears here after it has passed our real-money withdrawal test. How we test (in Norwegian)
Who this guide is for
Many people live, work or study in Norway without Norwegian as their first language. Most casino sites aimed at Norway are written in Norwegian, and the important details are buried in the terms: wagering rules, withdrawal limits, identity checks. If you read those in a second language, it is easy to miss the one line that matters.
Our main site is in Norwegian. This English section covers the questions we hear most from English speakers. When we link to a full test or to our method, that page is in Norwegian, and we say so.
How the Norwegian market works
The Gambling Act (pengespilloven) came into force on 1 January 2023. It gives Norsk Tipping the exclusive right to offer casino games and lotteries in Norway, and Norsk Rikstoto the right to horse betting. The regulator is Lotteri- og stiftelsestilsynet, usually just called Lotteritilsynet.
Many international casinos still accept players from Norway and have Norwegian-language sites, kroner accounts and Norwegian-speaking support. The law has rules for those companies and for anyone who helps them with marketing or payments, and we explain those rules on a separate page: online gambling in Norway: what the law says.
What this means for you in practice: there are plenty of casinos to choose from, but the payment methods can be more limited than you are used to, and they change.
The Norwegian words you will see in every casino
Even on English versions of casino sites, the Norwegian terms often show up in banners, emails and support chats. These are the ones worth knowing.

| Norwegian | English | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| innskudd | deposit | Check the minimum and whether a fee applies to your method |
| uttak | withdrawal | The real test of any casino: how long it takes and what is asked of you |
| omsetningskrav | wagering requirement | How many times a bonus must be played through before it can be withdrawn |
| gratisspinn | free spins | Winnings from them usually come with their own wagering rule |
| velkomstbonus | welcome bonus | Usually a match on your first deposit, with terms attached |
| spilleautomater | slot machines | The games that most often count fully towards wagering |
| vilkår | terms and conditions | Where the maximum bet, game rules and limits are written |
| ansvarlig spill | responsible gambling | The page where you set deposit limits, pauses and self-exclusion |
Paying in kroner
Most casinos that accept Norwegian players let you hold your account in Norwegian kroner. Choose that when you register if you can. An account in euros means every deposit and withdrawal is converted, and the amount that reaches your bank depends on the exchange rate on the day.

Vipps is the payment app almost everyone in Norway uses: it handled 86% of person-to-person payments according to Norges Bank. Do not expect to see it in a casino cashier, though. Section 5 of the Gambling Act bans facilitating payments for gambling that does not have a Norwegian permit, so Norwegian banks stop many card payments and transfers to these sites. That is why the methods on offer change from month to month, and why we always write down which method we used and on what date.
The methods that tend to be quickest for withdrawals are e-wallets and, at some casinos, cryptocurrency. Our guide to fast payout casinos explains what decides how quickly the money arrives.
How we test, in short
We open an account like any other player, deposit our own kroner, play, read the terms line by line and ask for a withdrawal. For each withdrawal we note three times: when we asked, when the casino approved it, and when the money was in our account. A casino only appears on our list after that test.
The score from 1 to 5 is based on what we measured. The withdrawal counts most, then the terms, payment methods, customer support and how easy it is to set limits. The full method is on our page slik tester vi (in Norwegian), and what we mean by "best" is explained in best online casino Norway.
Tax on winnings
This is where Norway surprises many newcomers. According to Skatteetaten, single winnings over NOK 10,000 from taxable gambling must be reported, and winnings from foreign commercial operators, which includes most online casinos, are generally taxable above that amount. Winnings from Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto are tax-free. There is an exemption for some operators in the EEA, but only where the whole profit goes to charitable or non-profit purposes.
If you win a large amount, keep a record of deposits, withdrawals and dates, and check Skatteetaten's page on winnings for how to report them.
Limits, pauses and help
For every casino we test, we check how easy it is to set a deposit limit or take a pause. Set your limit before you play, not after a bad evening.

If gambling stops being fun, Hjelpelinjen is free and anonymous on 800 800 40. The phone line is open on weekdays from 09 to 18 and the chat from 11 to 15. Gamban, a program that blocks gambling sites on your devices, is available free in Norway through Hjelpelinjen, Norsk Tipping or Spillavhengighet Norge. Lotteritilsynet explains pauses and self-exclusion on its page about gambling problems.
